Walnutian Glory...

Well hello there, friends! Thanks for checking in, it’s time for another update. Check out the finished shot of this lefty Birdsong Fusion bass. Sometimes when requested (on orders) or we get inspired (for inventory), we go beyond “figured” woods into the realm of the wild stuff. Rustic, random-grained, AMAZING looking pieces that need securing in some spots and a little fill in others, careful shaping and sanding, and what all the extra care brings out when that first coat of hand rubbed oil finish is rubbed on… WOW.

So here are TWO “WOWs” - one done, and one potential wow. That done one got real turquoise in the voids, for a truly beyond wild look. This one, this is in the just-coming-out-of-the-vision stage. Luthier Jake got his hands on the last piece of this amazing walnut slab, grabbed the Corto body template (Cortobass, Corto2 models) and it fit PERFECTLY as a really cool ONE-PIECE body, with all the grain stripes, coloration, and wild natural character - including flamey rays radiating out from the knot! This is going to oil up looking like the 4th of July. CAN WE BUILD IT FOR YOU?

This would be a great gift for Christmas too, even for YOURSELF, as we could slot it in to have it finished up later in the year. If you’re interested, call me (Scott) at 512-395-5126 or email scott@birdsongguitars.com. Or PM me on Facebook, many of you follow me on there. Here’s Jake with a walnut Corto2.

Our main and most popular wood choice, walnut is just a bunch of BROWN WOOD GOODNESS, from the plain to the sublime; the grain is always holding surprises for the finish to bring out, it’s mostly a medium weight wood and - Birdsongs being smaller - a ready to rock bass of walnut is still in the 8-and-change pound range; perfectly balanced. The tonal influence of body wood does factor in but more as a seasoning than main component, it being “medium density wood” that is providing its basic wood influence… but walnut specifically we’ve found to be very even lows to highs with no dips or spikes in frequencies. It’s just GREAT wood, looks great, works great, finishes great, and goes with any hardware - chrome looks classic and is a great contrast; the golden in the wood tones down the blinginess of gold, while the gold brings OUT the golden in the wood, a very mutual dance; and black on brown is just dark and gorgeous. We use mostly American black walnut, and we can even incorporate walnut into the neck with the maple for great effect. Walnutian glory! YES.

SO, it’s just about June… time to start teasing you about the 4th of July 20th ANNIVERSARY goings-on at Birdsong Guitars! Next week. For now, enjoy some pics of walnut instruments past, and have a wonderful weekend. Those around you, love them. Those no longer, honor them. Those to come, invite them. Play and make some music and share your good vibrations.

Thanks so much for being with us!
